Born in a small village near Einsiedeln, Switzerland, on September 9, 1889, he was the son of a farmer. Graduated as a primary school teacher in 1911, he took the entrance examination at the University of Geneva eight years later and studied Pharmacy, receiving the Swiss federal diploma as a pharmacist in 1923 and a Ph.D. degree. In 1931 he opened the Dr. Steiner Apotheke & Bahnhofdrogerie in Bienne. He died on September 22, 1983 at the age of 94, having devoted 52 years of his life to his pharmacy. In accordance with his will, a yearly prize is to be awarded for outstanding contributions in the field of cancer research.
